Closure for everyone’s safety

It has been just over two weeks since I announced the closure of our church. It was not an easy decision to make but I’m certain in the circumstances, the right one. It would seem that many of you were in agreement, even though like me you felt sadness. Thank you for all the supportive emails. However, while a small number of churches have closed, the majority have remained open leading many of you to wonder why we’re not all singing from the same hymn sheet, so to speak.

If I could put you in the picture. A few weeks ago our Archbishop, John Wilson encouraged priests to keep their churches open for Mass and private prayer if it was safe to do so, but the decision would ultimately lie with the parish priest. He has always stressed that he would support what ever decision the priests made. At the time of St Edmund’s closure, I informed you that we would continue to review the situation on a fortnightly basis and although a little bit behind schedule I will be gathering with my clergy team to discuss the situation.

Certainly, one of the issues for discussion will be the different ways in which we can serve you via livestreaming.
