Fr Robert Ellis was assistant priest at St Edmund’s alongside David Gummett in the 1980s whilst Fr Peter Strand was parish priest. Fr Robert died on October 29th in Kingston Hospital. Barbara Ferrando gives a few memories – Umberto and I met Robert, together with Fr David Gummett, while they were at St Edmund’s Parish, being Assistant Priests with Fr Strand many years ago. Umberto and I kept in touch with Robert over the years, while he served at Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, Surrey Quays, then Northfleet and latterly St Thomas Aquinas, at Ham, Richmond. We attended his installation at the first two parishes. I believe he was involved in the drama group at the church. He has regularly been invited to the Beckenham Catenians Clergy Nights and very kindly appeared to serve at Umberto’s requiem, which I didn’t know about until I entered the church. He has also visited us at home for dinner with other members of our congregation. As a family we all enjoyed his friendship, I shall miss him.
