Today is Spy Wednesday – the gospel reading from Matthew 19 describes the treachery of Judas. As I said in my homily at Mass yesterday, when we looked at this through the lens of John’s gospel, part of the message is the chance we have to reflect on the ways in which we betray the Lord through our own sinfulness and how this affects the world in which we live; traditionally Holy Week is a time of penitence which is perhaps a message we need to heed particularly this year. We should also bear in mind that at times in Christian history the focus on Judas has been a pretext for anti-Judaism, sometimes reflected in works of art; and that is something we should be penitent about as a community.
At St George’s cathedral this morning the Archbishop of Southwark will celebrate the Mass of the Chrism (clergy only, sadly). It is being live-streamed and can we watched via www.rcsouthwark.co.uk, as can other celebrations this week led by the archbishop. Please hold the archbishop and the priests of this diocese in your prayers.
Rosary this morning before the 10am Mass.
God bless and take care
