Today, the day before St Augustine’s day, the Church honours his mother St Monica – they are shown together in this modern painting. In his ‘Confessions’, the account of his religious conversion, Augustine gives a vivid picture of his mother’s prayers and encouragement which helped him to become a Christian; it also captures their deep love. Recently a number of works of fiction have explored the women in Augustine’s life, including Monica, so it’s good to honour her today; we also often forget that she was a Berber from Algeria and had to endure an adulterous husband.
